Stuffed, Roasted Duck

Andrew - talking to his current fav stuffed animal, a duck: "Well, he just gets cold outside, b/c he stays outside for a long time...so he has to come inside and 'roast up' in a blanket."

Jim: "Did you say 'rest up' or 'roast up'?"

Andrew: "He just gets roasted up in a blanket b/c he's so cold!"

Poor little duck...good thing he's not real!!

Cow Dogs

Andrew: "What's a dalmatian?"

Me: "It's a white dog with black spots. They're like 'Smoky' dogs (a dog from the TV show 'Rescue Heroes')"

Andrew: "Oh, I thought they were just called 'cow-dogs' because they just have spots like cows do!"

Bugs: boys vs. girls

Peter picked up what was a VERY DEAD bug from the back porch.

Girl response:
It was all I could do to not yell, "Eww...Gross! Don't touch that!" (I said it in my head)

Boy response:
"Yook! Dat MY bug! He SMILIN' at me!"

Play-doh for dinner, anyone?

Grandma Wadle sent Andrew a 'play-doh burger maker' for his birthday. He had to wait a WHOLE WEEK to play with it (we waited for a rainy day!), but both he and Peter had a blast when they did. (Mom, however, wanted to chuck the play-doh into the garbage and claim it got lost so that we'd never have to play it again, but I digress...)

Andrew - quite proud of his play-doh burger

A close-up - doesn't it look delicious?

Peter made 'steak-fries' to go with it - I think that was his favorite part!

Wii Whack...

Peter & Andrew love to play Wii. They especially like to play "SpeedSlice" where they have to slice random things at certain angles with their swords - things like sushi, cupcakes, bamboo, clocks, diamonds, etc.

Andrew usually wins...Peter just likes to jump up and down and wave his controller wildly - but they both have fun.

Today, during the game, Peter turned around to look at me. "Hi Mom! I just whackin' stuff!"

Andrew's 5th b-day with the Lerners

Andrew celebrated birthday #5 with his cousins, aunts, uncle and grandparents in Dallas. They had hotdogs for dinner and went to a park to fly a kite. He even got his specially requested 'lemon cake' from Nanny!

Andrew's b-day - quotes.

Over birthday ice cream at Baskin Robbins -
Jim: "Is 5 old?"
Andrew: "It might be...but I'm not really sure."

On the phone to an uncle -
Andrew: "I'm just 5 now, but I can't go to school because I'm still small like when I was just 3 and 4." (Apparently, he thought he was going to grow A LOT as SOON as he turned 5 and would need all new clothes and everything! He was, in fact, very disappointed that none of the presents he'd opened had been new (bigger) clothes.)

After presents, dinner & cake as he remembered his big day -
Andrew: "Man, I jus' LOVE my birthday!"
Peter: "Me, too!"

And, at bedtime:
Andrew: "This was just the best birthday EVER!"

Andrew turns 5 - more presents

Andrew got a new train hat and a watch - but it doesn't 'beep' like mom's does.
He also got a dinosaur book and cool new mug with pictures on it for hot cocoa!

Opening the mug (yes, I know that's Christmas wrapping paper....)

"Oh. my. gosh! It's a mug with my pictures on it!"

Andrew turns 5 - the cake!

Andrew wanted a cake with blue writing on it. He was very emphatic about blue writing! We went to the store and had the bakery lady add a number 5 - in blue!

The blue #5

With the special #5 candle Andrew picked out at the store

He likes his cake!

Blowing out the candle!

Taking out the candle so he can eat the cake!

Tasty Cake!

Blue cake leads to blue tongues...

Andrew turns 5 - special dinner!

Andrew wanted the 'special dinner with pineapple and rice' (i.e. - frozen 'Wanchai Ferry' dinner). I happily obliged. As you can see, he's quite happy with his choice!

First bite...

Peter likes it, too. "Mmm...this so good dinner Mom!"

Having fun playing with the new toys!

Andrew turns 5 - presents from Grandma & Grandpa

Andrew woke up a little after 7 am, rushed into mom's room and said, "Can I open my presents now?!" (this would be why they are wearing PJs in these photos). Grandma & Grandpa sent a box with presents in it a day early, and Andrew was chomping at the bit to open them. It was near torture to make the almost-5-year old wait nearly a WHOLE DAY to open a present!

Andrew opens his first present...

It's a kite!

Opening another present...

"Oh! It's the making burgers one!!"

"It's a computer!"
(not a real one...but it looks a lot like it)

Peter helps check out the new toy.

overheard conversations...

Andrew & Peter made rain gauges that looked like bird houses today. They decided to fill the rain gauge part up with bird seed to make them bird feeders. This afternoon, Peter went out in the backyard and grabbed the little bird-seed container and walked around the yard. He shouted up to the birds in the neighbor's tree and those flying by: "Birdies? Wanna eat? Have some bird-food!"

*****************

Andrew to Peter: "Did you know that you were born? and you were a baby when you were born?" (Andrew pronounces 'born' like 'bore-in')

Peter: "Yeah"

Andrew: "Wasn't that so cool?"

*******************

Andrew to Peter: "You.stay.off.my.bed! You understand?!"
Peter: "Yessir"

At least someone is being called sir in the house...

no vegetarians allowed

Jim, picking up Peter: "Man, Peter, you really are solid!"

Peter: "I not salad, I Peter-man!"

conversationalists they are not...yet

Andrew, walking into playroom where Peter is playing: "hi!"

Peter, looking up, smiling: "hi! you just wake up?"

Andrew: "yep"

I'd like to say it was b/c they just woke up, but neither of them slept today...

like Father, like son...

I came out from the other room and found this...

And then this...

storytime...

Reading on the couch
Each enjoying their own story
Andrew's book is apparently much more interesting!

Andrew 'reads' to Peter

It's a really good book...

Andrew's book has taken over all interest

t.p. tower

I asked the boys to help me distribute t.p. to the 2 bathrooms. I came in later to find this...

yep...that's 9 rolls of t.p.

things a parent doesn't want to hear...

Andrew, coming in from outside: "Hey mom! What does this nail go to?" while holding a loose nail in his blue-mittened hand.

Peter, after climbing into my bed on a Monday morning: "I so soakin' wet."
Yeah, he wasn't kidding...sheets, pillow and blanket from his bed as well as his PJs went in the laundry...all before 7:30 am!
